How Gen Z Culture is Choosing Social Wellness Over Traditional Nightlife

The New Happy Hour: Thai Gen Z are redefining their social scene by swapping out cocktail bars for health-focused venues.
Is social wellness the new dopamine hit? A profound cultural shift has been unfolding among Thai Gen Z, redefining what it means to prioritize well-being in a rapidly changing world. Emerging from the shadows of a global pandemic and heightened mental health awareness, this generation embodies a fresh understanding of the importance of self-care and health.
Wellness isn’t just a fleeting trend or a new wave sweeping through Bangkok; it has become an essential lifestyle for younger generations. Influencers are actively promoting contrast therapies like ice baths and saunas, capturing the attention of Gen Z who passionately follow their role models. While these practices are rooted in centuries of tradition, the contemporary approach to experiencing them is changing drastically.
Extreme hot and cold therapies are now mainstream, with people actively seeking both distress and relaxation. What began as a few friends in plastic tubs filled with ice, has evolved into vibrant social hubs where locals and expats gather to engage in ice baths and cold plunges. This growing enthusiasm for wellness in Bangkok has paved the way for specialized wellness sanctuaries dedicated to offering these contrast therapies, making them more accessible and appealing for everyone.
What’s particularly compelling is also the surge of interest among Generation Z in adopting healthier lifestyle choices. This dynamic group is shifting toward a more sober-conscious and mindful approach to drinking. While they’re not completely giving up alcohol, they are consciously reducing their consumption. Instead of traditional heavy drinking, Gen Z is gravitating toward a coffee and matcha culture, along with zero-proof cocktail bars. They are opting for nutritious choices like ginger and raw turmeric shots to promote wellness and sidestep hangovers. In Thailand, young consumers are increasingly attracted to beverages that offer added health benefits, such as vitamins, collagen, and probiotics. This growing awareness about what they consume reflects a broader trend of mindfulness, extending from food to drinks. Embracing this shift not only enhances their health but also aligns with their values, making it a powerful movement towards better living.
Beyond Bangkok, wellness therapies have transformed from a niche athletic practice into a dynamic wellness movement flourishing in Thailand's premier coastal destinations like Hua Hin, Phuket, Koh Phangan, and Koh Samui. Each of these regions uniquely caters to diverse groups, attracting a diverse clientele—from elite Muay Thai fighters perfecting their craft to luxury digital nomads in search of holistic rejuvenation. They flock to wellness recovery centers and upscale resorts that offer guided sessions designed to enhance well-being.
In Bangkok, many of these wellness sanctuaries are conveniently situated along the Sukhumvit line, extending to trendy neighborhoods like Asok, Thonglor, and Phra Khanong. These spots are not just places for recovery; they are becoming sought-after hangout spaces that blend relaxation with social engagement.
Socials Sukhumvit, located in Sukhumvit 101, is a unique venue that combines a cocktail bar with a bathhouse. This captivating social terrace has been the go-to destination for relaxation and connection since its inception in 2024. Owner Bunyesa ‘May’ Ngoenthong emphasizes the shift in social spaces, noting that wellness clubs are redefining how we connect—moving beyond conventional bars and nightclubs.

“Wellness has evolved from a personal health routine into a lifestyle that combines health, socializing, and fun, especially for Gen Z,” Ngoenthong shares. Additionally, Socials Sukhumvit offers a range of post-workout drinks, from organic coffee to cocktails, catering to health-conscious consumers who want to enjoy their beverages of choice.
As the demand for contrast therapy continues to surge, ARAH Ice Bath & Sauna — the new kid on the block — stands out as a popular destination in Sukhumvit 49, Bangkok. This resort-style wellness retreat expertly combines mental and physical therapy with mindful practices, including yoga and sound healing, alongside transformative recovery options such as cold plunges, hot tubs, and saunas.

Founder and owner Nan Siriboonyanun has witnessed firsthand this evolving trend, as more guests seek contrast therapy not merely for relaxation but as a vital path to self-connection and holistic wellness.
“Wellness used to be something people did privately, like a spa day or a morning run. Gen Z has made it social. It's less about escaping and more about connecting,” Nan shared.
Nan also highlighted how contrast therapy has evolved beyond its roots in athletics, now integrated into everyday life as a valuable ritual. For many in Gen Z and Gen Y, the modern hangout spot is swiftly becoming a preferred alternative to nightclubs. “They offer what a night out used to: atmosphere, good company and a sense of belonging. I wouldn't say nightlife is disappearing, but there is now a real choice, and many young people choose clarity over a late night,” she added.
Younger consumers are not abandoning drinking altogether; instead, they are embracing a sober-curious lifestyle and taking charge of their drinking habits. Considering this trend, Bangkok’s top bars are dedicating equal attention to their zero-proof options as they do to their cocktail menus. Mixologists are embracing this change by crafting thoughtfully designed non-alcoholic drinks that incorporate botanicals, herbs, and fresh fruits. With Gen Z and Gen Y leading the way, we are witnessing an entirely new consumer ecosystem that demonstrates how this generation knows how to socialize meaningfully while skillfully managing their energy and time.
“The focus has moved from "diet" to "function." People want to know what's in their glass and why adaptogens, ginger shots, electrolytes, are thoughtful zero-proof options. Presentation matters too so a well-made functional drink can feel just as special as a cocktail,” shared Nan.
Another wellness sanctuary, Baan Ice Bath & Spa, opened earlier this year and is nestled in a lush tropical garden in Phutthamonthon Sai 2. The spa offers thermal contrast therapies and deep restoration treatments. The team at Baan emphasizes that wellness is no longer just about individual self-care in isolation; it has evolved into a lifestyle that fosters connection among people, especially for newer generations.

“Younger generations want experiences that make them feel good, both physically and mentally, while also allowing them to spend meaningful time with friends,” explained the Baan Team.
Social media has played a crucial role in introducing wellness practices to a broader audience, extending the current trends.
According to the Baan Team, “Social media can introduce people to a trend, but the quality of the experience is what encourages them to return. Authenticity, community, and trust are becoming increasingly important."
They also noted that “People are looking for ways to step away from their busy routines, disconnect from digital distractions, and reconnect with themselves. Influencers play a significant role in introducing new wellness practices and making them feel more accessible, particularly to younger audiences."

Elevating the urban wellness scene even further, RECHILL Ice Bath & Sauna Social Club, a popular urban wellness recovery destination that embodies the philosophy of “Feeling Better Together” has been garnering attention. Since opening its first branch in Asok last year, RECHILL has quickly gained popularity, and the recent launch of its new Thonglor location—set amidst vibrant greenery—has taken things up a notch. This recovery club focuses on a complete contrast circuit, offering amenities such as an ice bath, cold plunge, sauna, steam room, hot tub, breathwork sessions, and yoga classes.
Founder Gavin Tatum feels that Gen Z are becoming much more aware of what they’re putting into their bodies and looking past just taste and want drinks that offer something beneficial.
“I also think consumers are becoming more educated about ingredients. They’re paying closer attention to sugar, artificial additives, and whether products actually deliver what they promise. We’re seeing growing interest in matcha, ceremonial cacao, electrolytes, protein drinks, and functional ingredients associated with energy, hydration, focus, and recovery. At RECHILL, we’ve built our Power Café around this idea. We want healthy options that taste great and fit naturally into people’s lifestyles,” he shared.

Moreover, he explains that Generation Z's shift toward contrast therapies and healthier options is particularly interesting because they have grown up immersed in social media, smartphones, and constant digital stimulation.
“They’re much more aware of concepts like dopamine, instant gratification, and the value of a “dopamine detox” than previous generations were at their age. Earlier generations simply didn’t grow up with algorithms and social media competing for their attention 24/7,” he shared.
Gavin believes that real human connections and physical experiences will become even more valuable in the near future. Additionally, younger generations are already beginning to recognize this early.
“The more time we spend interacting through screens, the more we crave genuine, real-world experiences. One of the main reasons I created RECHILL was because I had this vision of where the world was heading. I could see a future where technology would become so integrated into our lives that we’d be more digitally connected than ever, but potentially more disconnected from each other as human beings. Now, with AI advancing so quickly and robots beginning to enter everyday life, we’re moving toward a world where more and more things can be automated,” said Gavin.

What began as a solitary wellness ritual has blossomed into a captivating social phenomenon, fundamentally transforming the ways in which a new generation connects, recharges, and discovers belonging. As these dynamic wellness spaces gain momentum and expand in popularity, we are entering a more health-conscious society that prioritizes a holistic approach to socializing. This significant shift not only enhances our well-being but also broadens access to wellness clubs across Thailand, allowing everyone to experience the benefits of community-driven health and wellness.
